I, myself, am always amused at the scholarly methods of dealing with "erotica", aka pornography, aka dirty pictures, aka a lot of things with much more Anglo-Saxon words, and more consonants. You could read a lot of steamy stuff in the old days if you could translate Latin. Never quite understood whether it was to separate the upper and lower classes, or merely to keep out the cops. Guess it's about the same thing. Children couldn't read Latin, and although grown men could, women couldn't. I find it curious, and frustrating, because I can't read Latin, so I can't read any of the good stuff. |
