I think you are mistaken. I think it is well established historically that the poor feel little or no real pain, or really suffer from hunger or thirst or cold. These tribulations are put upon the poor (whom we have always with us, said the man) so that they can learn strength of character and believe in the generosity and the greatness of God. Those of us who are industrious enough to afford to sample a wide variety of analgesics until we find the ones that turn us on, and still have the strength of character not to become addicted have an obligation to help the poor benighted people. I happen to have a really great drug program that permits me to buy almost unlimited quantities of first-rate selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (like Prozac and Paxil) at pennies each instead of $3 which the poor are charged by the drug monopolies. When people beg from me or accost me on the street, I slip them their choice.
