I saw Dogma day before yesterday. I really liked it. It was at a fairly adolescent level, reminded me a lot of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, lots of body type humor. But, aside from that, the spirituality was very intense. I am a fairly devout Christian, but not at all offended by the twists on the faith. E.G., Chris Rock plays the 13th Apostle, who informs us that he has been left out of the Bible because he was a black man. And lets us in on the fact that Christ was black, too. And the heroine is the Last Scion, related to Christ because Mary and Joseph had children that were Christ's brothers and sisters. And God is a woman, played by Alannis Morrisette, and quite well, too, IMO. Obviously, stuff like this is going to tick some people off, but no one that really gets Christ's message, IMO. And there is a little sex, and a lot of violence, and some other stuff that will rub traditional Christians the wrong way, and the Christianity will rub most other people the wrong way, so I imagine that the audience isn't large. But I really, really liked it. |
