I concur with LRR re Cipro from personal experience. I had an horrific infection from an animal bite, one that really warranted a hospital stay and IV treatment. I couldn't stay unless my life were in immediate danger (family problems), so after some discussion the docs decided to put me on very high doses of oral Cipro. Wow, did that stuff work!

There are some weird side effects possible at very high dosage levels and I encountered them all. <VBG> However, they were well worth it to clear that infection out rapidly.

As LRR notes, glucosamine is a nutritional supplement. Interestingly, it just turned up recently on "feelies"--talk about an startling coincidence. It's useful for cartilage problems, but from what I know of it, it's not likely to be of a lot of help in your wife's current situation. If you don't feel in the mood to wander over to "feelies," I'll find the link for you.
