So what you are proposing is basically a "wrapper" into which you could make calls for added fucntionality. Something along the lines of basic network functionality (log in, drive mapping, communications etc) with the ability to add functionality (client-side agents) as needed on the fly.

Well from what I understand of the client software, Novell's client has become rather untamely. Since ZENworks first appeared I think Novell has made a grand effort to centralize the client software in that I don't need differentiating clients on my workstations for various services (managewise, zenworks, etc). While this is a benefit in some areas, it does add complexity to the client and some "bloat".

True I would like to see better support within the client but isn't there a 2 way street on this? I mean, the client software works in tandem with the underlying OS in extending the functionality of the workstation. Unless Novell can develop it's client with better integration with the underlying OS, the features you are looking for may not come easily.

Perhaps there are limitations to what Novell can develop to with regard to accessing code for any OS they want to support.(I'm not just referring to Windows - where's the UNIX client?) Perhaps the "politics" of the situation hamper efforts to develop just what you are looking for :)

Then again I'll remind myself (and others) that I'm not a programmer so this comes with some caveat.

Wasn't it said during BrainShare last year that MSFT was going to ship the Novell Client with every copy of Windows2000? MSFT was not developing their own copy of a NetWare client any longer. Perhaps this will lead to more cooperation on making the 2 system work better.

Perhaps digitalme will give us the first piece of the answer to your dilemma. I'm working on my own regarding drive mappings - seems a certain DOS application works fine with Client v2.2 for Win95 but not the latest version. Right now an entire ZENworks roll out is on hold until we can "fix" the problem. Neither side wants to help and points fingers at the other.... what a grand business we're in :)
