[Straight talk]
<<<Does Amati's management, for example, realize that whatever they said last month at the Goldman Sachs conference was NOT a turnon, given the subsequent decline in the stock, and that they need to tell their story differently in New York and Boston this week?>>>
Yes they do. BUT, they will not tell the analysts what they want to hear until it's true. The analysts want a contract with numbers attached and Amati cannot give that to them until they have the release to do so. HKT holds the all the cards on that one. The others --- apart from some impressive extended trials --- are not final yet. I've never dealt with anyone more straight than RC. He drives me nuts. I want him to hype the story. He won't. I want him to tell me the releases are coming out tomorrow. . . the next day. . . by Friday. . . He won't. (He says InterOp at the latest.) We go down the facts one by one and the story's intact but it's not where the big houses want it. When will it be there? Today. . . tomorrow. . . by Friday. . . by InterOp. . . ? Take your pick. Each time I get discouraged (read: impatient), I go back to my files and go over the reasons I bought in the first place --- market drivers, telco's need to be competitive with bandwidth solutions, FCC edicts to get the pressure off the voice network, stated intentions of telecommunications giants world-wide, Amati's success with GTE, MCI, France Telecom, etc., Amati's superior technology (even apart from holding the standard), Amati's world-class partners and what they're doing to reorganize their companies to meet the expected market (Motorola and TI have both set up DSL divisions, NEC is expanding mfg. capacity)--- and I relax. Yes, the story's not only intact, it's getting stronger. Coverage will come. It's not a matter of if but when. Just my take.
Okay, enough on this. Now I have a favor to ask. If you know anyone at Salomon, Bros., try to get a copy of the PairGain report that was just released a few minutes ago. Their telecommunications analyst, Steve Levy, has initiated coverage with a BUY, and I'm told Amati gets several positive mentions. I'm particularily anxious to see the wording regarding licensing. Let me know what you find out.
Cheers!
Pat
