I think most people are conflicted by abortion. That's why lots of people are personally against it but don't want to make that decision for other people. That type of angst is reflected in the polls about abortion. Lots of people are comfortable with abortion in the first 3 months, and very, very few with an abortion in the last 3 months (aside from life of the mother- which a very big majority recognize as legitimate).

Does majority opinion make for right? Well, not if your view is religion based- so the religious people with a total aversion to abortion can never be swayed by rational argument. And I can understand that, but I can't sympathize with inflicting religion based morality on other people via the mechanism of the State's legal machinery. I personally think abortion is the killing of a human. And I would never have one myself, except in the case of deformity or retardation- in which case I definitely would- nor would I ever think it was right to try to inflict my opinions on anyone else via laws and regulations to make people behave like me. If other people are comfortable with aborting their children then they have to live with the consequences of what they have done. And if the right to late term abortions, which really bother me, is curtailed to cases of medical necessity then I think that is the way it should be.

But because my position and yours, and the position of the vast majority of Americans, is a moderate position, we would never satisfy either the hard core pro-life (anti-choice) or the pro-choice (semi- anti- life). What IS odd is that we are vocal moderates (you and I and Rambi)- moderates aren't usually vocal, so bully for us, eh?
