Leonids pretty good.
From the reports I've seen on the web, the best Leonid show was in eastern Europe and the Middle East. One observer in Jordan reported a spectacular display. Interestingly, this corresponded to the published forecasts. The reports from North America had a lot of "We didn't see anything". I guess that we in east San Diego county did pretty good then. The weather started off not so good, partly cloudy at both mid and high level altitudes at midnight. The gusty winds we had in the daytime had fortunately calmed down. After the moon set about 1 am, the sky conditions continued to improve. By 3 am, it was mostly clear and cold. By dawn, all our equipment cases were covered with frost. The transparency was quite good. We seemed to reach a peak in meteors about 4 am when we counted 20 meteors in 10 minutes. At this point, the radiant was at the zenith. This was an hourly rate of 120. I'd estimate the rate two hours earlier was about 30-40 per hour. Not a storm by any means, but a respectable shower. The meteors themselves were much fainter that the fireballs we saw last year. Most were in the 1st and 2nd magnitude range, a few brighter. A couple left a trail visible for a few seconds. The meteors appeared to cluster together, 4 or 5 in a few seconds, then nothing for a few minutes. I'm glad we braved the desert cold for the show. We exposed two rolls of film, but didn't catch a single meteor. Such is luck.
