Zoltan, I don't think that your neat division into "left" and "right" holds when the question is who deserves first prize for ending the Cold War.

With the exception of folks like Richard Pipes, who was a Reagan Administration official himself, Soviet specialists tended to give it to Gorbachev, not because they had "socialist sympathies," but because they were more familiar with, and hence more impressed by, the sheer institutional difficulties -- and the internal opposition -- he had to overcome. It was tougher for him, in other words.

Why can't Reagan and Gorbachev share the prize? What's the big deal?
