Tony,

One I saw was nothing but water!

I've seen/read/heard many seemingly impossible ideas for next generation IC's. Many are pie-in-the-sky IMHO and will never come close to getting a place on the fab floor. While some people propose making a leap from one technology to another, history has shown that baby steps are the more likely course of action. For instance, let's say that the leading edge 12 inch fabs were to be built with advanced X-RAY lithography(or nothing but water<VBG>) 3 years out, what are the chances that only certain applications would see this type of expenditure since many would not need the bleeding edge technology since it would not be necessarily be cost effective. Also what are the chances that future chips may be a hybrid of new and current technology? On any chip there are critical and non-critical layers. Who is to say we could not merge the new technology with that currently being employed? These are questions to complex for my feeble mind and part of what makes this sector so fascinating:-)

Stay tuned,

Brian
