Hello Scott,

Well, it is your fault that I've taken the "plunge" more seriously. Of course it will probably take me a few years to get up to speed with actual programming and application structure. Any suggestions on a good book or CBT for C/C++ programming? :)

Another thing that sparked my interest in PDAs is a few instructors here at work have received the new Handspring Visor Deluxe (palmpilot clone) in the last week. It's just the same functionality as the Palm 3x with 8MB memory and an expansion slot (like a GameBoy?!?) for additional modules.

We've talked about some of the possible modules and it's rather interesting the responses we can up with let alone what some companies are already working on. [there's a company that will mass produce a module for retail sale - they work out a deal with you]

There are some modules available right now like a 33.6kb modem, backup and MP3 player. Well, what about an ethernet module (3Com already has an ethernet cradle and HotSync "server" software for corporate solutions).

Other modules we thought of:

1) Network sniffer and security detection/log reader (possible software add-on for ethernet module)
2) Fluke-type network cable & protocol tester
3) voice-mail module (Voice over IP integration would probably preclude this module)
4) loads of games!
5) pager module (maybe incorporate a wireless antenna system for PQA applications a la Palm VII).
6) web cache module
(download web content into this memory module for offline viewing - content providers can develop specialized content for just such an application. I can think of a few sites who would jump into this (online auction sites, newsfeeds, stock quotes, email newsletters, newsgroups!) as well as the possibility of creating a service that websites would employ to "translate" current content into "PDA-style" format)

Ok, I think I need to get back to my reading :) Thanks for the COMDEX update. The storage part seems rather interesting with all I've read about SANs recently (Storage Area Network). With more and more companies working towards network applicances, we'll see more work being done with just the technology you described.
