Dear Peter, I enjoyed your article. I've used linux for over six years and I'm amazed the the continuing positive acceleration of the Linux phonomenom. Now I must say that your article today was somewhat more useful..hmmmm...no fun, than this article just about a year ago. I come not to praise linux by Mike Surkan. zdnet.com
At the time I posted a reply. Alas all the talkback to this article has been removed.
So here is some of my reply to that article. I'm including this as a part of the answer to your question. Is Linux for the long haul??
Let's call it exponential mindshare. How do you measure it?
NOTE: Christopher Blizzard has worked for Redhat for just about a year and no longer maintains his list.
Tom Watson's Linux BuZZ Index. This is the number of articles about Linux found in main stream publications. Note: this may note count all articles. The numbers were found by counting articles by month at Christopher Blizzards Linux news articles.

Now Linux weekly news just posted several weeks ago the 10000 th article on Linux.
Now to the realness of Linux by my measurement of users comments. This is a result of talkback to Mike Surkan's article.
Everybody has an opinion. My opinion is based on my experience. I constantly challenge my assumptions about why I have a particular opinion. I like to measure how my opinion's compare with other intelligent people. So all you have to do is count. I've found in the past that individuals with hands on working technical experience have an excellent grasp of reality as opposed to those who live by advertising hype. But usually even amoung the seemingly technically literate their are at least 10% who inspite of obvious truth's just don't get it.
Do the number's agree.
This is a statistical summary of the talkback to Miley's "I come not to praise Linux ... " My rating system. -3 The Author, Mikey is intellectually Challenged. (or Sold soul to Bill) -2 Strongly Disagree -1 Somewhat Disagree 0 No opinion 1 Somewhat agree 2 Strongly Agree 3 Anyone who uses Linux is brain dead.
Summary, -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 43 37 3 0 2 4 3 83 | 9 90.2% disagree with Mikey.
