You are on the money again. Initially, the impact of the Philips deal went over my head (if I recall correctly, the market didn't react much immediatley after the announcement either - I could be wrong on that). I think the main reason was Philips didn't release many details of who else was involved and what the potential market share this technology would control.

It seems now that to produce equipment that is compatable with the leading edge appliances about to be unleashed by the entertainment biggies, everyone will have to get on the bandwagon. Otherwise (in my opinion) consumers may count the lack of this technology a strike against the product.

An example I can think of is when buying a VCR or TV, the consumer asks "does it support Dolby Digital"? When I was shopping for a TV a month ago, my search was being narrowed by what technologies the set supported now and which ones of the newer technologies the set could handle as well.

At least that's how I think when I buy new things. Comments on the average consumer's spending behaviours? May help determine the potential of the Philips deal.
