IDS Breathes New Life into Medical Diagnostic Testing
Toronto, Ontario--
Caduceon Inc., the biotechnology division of IDS Intelligent Detection Systems (T.ISD), is launching the first ever, automated breath analysis technology, at the Ontario Hospital Association's annual convention and exhibition today November 22nd and 23rd in Toronto.
"We have adapted IDS' core sensory technology to develop this breakthrough technology and expect it to greatly enhance the speed and accuracy of medical diagnosis and to significantly reduce its cost," says Graham Strachan, chairman, of Caduceon.
Breath analysis can provide a vast amount of information about metabolic processes in the body-more than 400 volatile organic compounds related to disease states such as diabetes, cardiac disorders and liver dysfunction have been identified in human breath. In the past, breath analysis technology has been complicated by technological barriers, at the start of the process-often, water must be removed from the sample because it can create physical and chemical interference.
"With IDS technology there is no need for water removal and the sensitivity of this equipment permits analysis from a normal breath sample," says Strachan. "Caduceon's breath analyzer will give medical professionals an accurate, cost-effective, portable and reliable tool to immediately gauge the metabolic state of their patients."
The technology has immediate use in point-of-care settings, such as emergency rooms and intensive care units, where it will help physicians gather crucial information in seconds. The healthcare applications will grow as the population ages. Dr. Mariusz Rybak, chairman and CEO, IDS believes the technology's applications extend beyond healthcare: "There is already an emerging demand for this kind of analysis in the fitness and alternative health markets," he says. "and it's speed and accuracy could have uses in other fields like occupational health and safety and law enforcement."
Graham Strachan, who was appointed chairman of Caduceon in October after 20 years experience in the Canadian biosciences industry, is excited about Caduceon's future: "I have great faith in Caduceon's ability to innovate and become a leader in the life sciences sector," says Strachan.
IDS is a dynamic developer, manufacturer and marketer of sophisticated detection devices and systems. The company operates through seven business units: Analytical & Security products and solutions, IDS Power Control Systems, Scintrex Earth Science Instrumentation, Survey & Exploration Technology Services, IEC (Integration, Engineering and Consulting), ChemiCorp International and Caduceon Inc. Its more than 70 products range from drug and explosive detectors to nuclear safety control instruments, oil and gas exploration and developing technologies for industrial process control and point-of-care health analysis.
