OSPF is used on the InteropNet as the internal IP routing protocol, BGP4
is used externally as the routing protocol to the Internet Service Providers,
and IP multicast service is provided across the InteropNet using DVMRP. A
connection to the Internet's Multicast Backbone (MBONE) provides the vendors
with complete Internet multicast capabilities. Debuting on this year's
InteropNet is trial IPv6 service. IPv6 is offered to all vendors on
the InteropNet using RIPv6, with a connection to the Internet's experimental
IPv6 network, the 6BONE.

Management Challenges Solved

A switched network of this size leads to a number of network management
challenges, since the traditional methods of monitoring shared media networks
no longer work in a switched network environment.

"To overcome the management challenges, we're pioneering new strategies to
implement network management for this new breed of interswitched network,"
said Doug Moeller, a veteran NOC Team member, and senior network engineer at
Bay Networks. "We're incorporating a number of different methods, including
port mirroring, conversation steering, RMON and custom scripts. It's a challenge, but
not impossible," said Moeller.

Unique Cabling

Typically every two aisles of booths are connected by a cable bundle or
"rib" suspended from the ceiling gridwork. At specific locations
throughout the show floor, the ribs will terminate into Concentrator equipment
racks. From there, individual "drops" are patched into the ATM
Edge devices or 100baseTX switches. The Concentrator racks are connected
together with a specially designed fiber bundle that contains 29 fibers each.
Additionally, special fiber optic cables are connected directly to exhibitor
booths that request special high speed services such as ATM.

The InteropNet will be deployed in 48 hours covering approximately
500,000 square feet of show floor space. The physical network includes
200 miles of twisted pair and 140 miles of fiber optic cable. This cable
joins over 2000 pieces of networking equipment, including routers, switches
and network management stations, not including exhibitor equipment.

The Network Operations Center (NOC)

In the Network Operations Center, which is located in the lobby of the Las
Vegas Convention Center, is the control center of the InteropNet. The NOC is
where the entire network comes together and is monitored by a carefully
selected team of industry experts. NOC Team members use SNMP-based network
management, distributed network analysis and portable test equipment to monitor
networks and perform troubleshooting and problem resolution.

The NOC Team

The NOC team members, from all over the U.S. and the world, are top
experts from industry, government and academic sectors of the networking
industry. These volunteers have a broad range of technical skills, strong
commitment, and direct hands-on experience installing complex networks. (See
attachment: NetWorld+Interop 97 Las Vegas NOC Team List.)

The NOC team is responsible for the design, installation, implementation
and operation of the InteropNet. The Las Vegas NOC team is comprised of
32 dedicated network professionals who volunteer their time to design and
create the InteropNet from the initial hot stage phase months before the
event, to on-site installation, management and teardown.

InteropNet Tours

Anyone interested in a closer look at the InteropNet should visit the
InteropNet Kiosk next to the Network Operations Center. Users can tour the
show network to learn how the technologies they are considering for their
networks work in an enterprise-class environment. NOC Team Members lead the
tours, which are conducted hourly and last for approximately 45 minutes.
Those interested can also see current network statistics on the
NOC web page at noc.interop.net.

Networld+Interop 97 Las Vegas InteropNet Contributor List

InteropNet Contributor status is determined based on the total number of
program priority points accumulated through vendor contributions and
commitment to the InteropNet. Contributor status levels are set relative to
the requirements of the network. The four contributor status levels are
Diamond, Platinum, Gold and Silver, with Diamond contributing the greatest
amount of equipment and human resources. For more information on the Interop
Contributor Program, and further explanation of the point system, call
415-578-6900 or email icp@interop.net for product and services contribution
information, and itm@interop.net for human resource contribution information.
