1600 GMT (1100 EST)

A Starsem Soyuz rocket is fueled and ready for launch today carrying the final four spacecraft for Globalstar's primary satellite constellation. Liftoff is planned for 11:20 a.m. EST (1620 GMT) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Globalstar initiated its space-based cellular telephone and paging service last month after having a minimum number of satellites in space to provide near worldwide coverage. Today's launch will bring the total number of Globalstar satellites in orbit to 48, completing the international consortium's fleet. Another quartet of satellites are due for launch in late January aboard a Boeing Delta 2 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to serve as on-orbit spares.

The final countdown sequence for today's launh began five hours prior to liftoff. The mobile gantry began retracted away from the Soyuz rocket at 10:53 a.m. EST (1553 GMT). The launch pad will begin its automatic sequence with five minutes remaining in the countdown.
