Let me take a stab at '4 tier architecture'.

To start with a client server is a 2 tier arch. All the
business logic is in the server and the client only
contains the "display" of the data.

3 tier goes a step further and separates the business logic
server into the data/database and the actual logic that
operates on the data.

The 4 tier arch. consists of:

Data/database
Business logic
Server (web or application)
Client

Another term for 4 tier Arch. is N-tier because it is
now recognized that this can be split many ways and
n-tier mearly recognizes this and allows for many splits
to occure and thus is VERY SCALEABLE.
