Big Web sites show steady October growth - survey

November 22, 1999 04:58 PM
NEW YORK, Nov 22 (Reuters) - While the number of visitors to the 50 most popular U.S. Internet sites rose slightly in October from September, the top Internet media networks gained audience share at the expense of smaller sites, a market survey released on Monday found.

The monthly market research report by Media Metrix Inc. MMXI of Internet traffic patterns showed the top four networks holding their respective rankings, while a few sites jostled for position to remain among the Top 10 sites.

America Online Inc. AOL was once again the No. 1 network of sites, followed by Yahoo! Inc. YHOO , Microsoft Corp. MSFT , Lycos Inc. LCOS and Walt Disney Co.'s DIS Go Network, which all held their respective ranks.

But while AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft and Lycos showed solid growth in visitors to their sites, traffic to Go, and No. 6-ranked network ExciteAtHome Corp. ATHM was less robust, and RealNetworks Inc. RNWK and CMGI Inc.'s CMGI AltaVista actually slipped in terms of audience numbers.

The No. 9 spot was taken over by diversified Web network Go2Net Inc. GNET , which saw a significant jump in visitors to 11.3 million from 9.8 million in September, bumping audio and video sites of RealNetworks out of the top 10.

Online greeting card service BlueMountainArts.com took the No. 10 spot, up from its No. 14 place in September. BlueMountainArts.com, which nudged out AltaVista, saw 10.9 million visitors in October, up from 9.1 million in September.

BlueMountainArts.com, the No. 1 online greeting card company, agreed in October to be acquired by ExciteAtHome for about $780 million in cash and stock.
