Mephisto,

If I were going to a funeral, I would not take a cell phone. I think it is impolite to use one at a business meeting as well.

Fortunately, there aren't too many rude people that use cell phones in public, and especially on public transit in Seattle.

I agree with the first part of your post wholeheartedly.

Now for the latter.

I work in a service industry, and have a pager. I am expected to return my pages promptly. To do that, I have to occasionally use my handheld cell phone in a public place.

I never considered it rude if I saw someone else using one, so never considered someone would think me rude.

I agree, if one was at a public function, using a cell phone to chat for personal reasons, it would be rude.

I simply don't believe I should be forced, or expected, to find a private place to return a business call on my cell phone.

Do you really consider it "rude" for someone to use a cell phone in public, or did I misinterpret your post?

Phil
