Summary of systems being sold in San Diego by small computer
stores which build their own computers. The following
summarizes the types of computer systems being advertised
in the weekly ComputorEdge flyer -- a free publication in
San Diego county.

Publication Date: 11/19/99 11/05/99 10/22/99
Number of storefronts: 32 34 32
Athlon systems: 66% 62% 50%
Athlon 700 systems: 44% 21% 0%
PIII systems: 97% 100% 100%
PIII 600 MHz: 69% 79% 50%
PIII Coppermine: 0% 0% 0%
Celeron systems: 84% 71% 91%
Celeron 500MHz systems:66% 53% 31%
K6-2 systems: 72% 82% 81%
K6-3 systems: 53% 68% 62%

The following trends are evident:
1. Athlon penetration continues to grow, in particular
the fastest speed grade.
2. Nearly everyone sells PIII systems, but surprisingly
PIII-600 systems dropped a little, pushed out by Athlons
as the "high end" offering. BTW, hardly any of the PIII-600
are the 133 MHz bus type.
3. It is clear AMD needs higher MHz K6x's to stay viable in
the price range. As the Celeron 500 became more
available and cheaper, some outlets dropped K6x.
4. It will be interesting to see this Friday and next
whether any Coppermine systems are available.
