re: free bandwidth, you say:

"Sounds like predictions for the cost of electricity when Nuclear Power plants were on the horizon..."

It's only a matter of degree, when you think of it.

When I was a kid a call to Southern Italy from Brooklyn was near impossible, and when if one was able to get it completed through a manual operator station it cost my dad ~ ten bucks per minute for the privilege of listening to the symphony of chirping sea gulls and the storms of the ocean. Today, depending on which carrier you use, it could be as low as 15 cents per minute, and it sounds like you're sitting in the next room.

I recently hopped on to Excite's voice chat line on a pre-arranged meet with someone in Rome, Italy... using VoIP. In this case, it was free, if you choose to ignore the overhead associated with my desktop (which I think has been more than adequately cost justified through other means). Come to think of it, some desktops today are also free. And there is nary a nuclear generator plant in sight ;-)

The quality of the call was still suspect, but it was an order of magnitude better sounding this time than the same kind of connection that I'd tried just a year ago using another operator's arrangement when digital signal processing still didn't work so well. And it keeps getting better, and cheaper, all the time.
