Yes, CompuServe uses its own private network and, incidentally (although not necessarily relevant to this thread!), it was the fact that CompuServe built one of the largest and most reliable on-line networks that gave the company a technological edge early on.

Unfortunately for CompuServe and those of us who have been subscribers ON and OFF over the years, the CompuServe network was deployed eons ago in technology time, and the cost of redesigning and upgrading such a vast private network is, ironically, what is also making the company unable to compete cost-effectively in this the age of the Web; and also one of the main reasons the company is now for sale.

Mmmmmmm..... Now I wonder to what extent the GIFT case may have also been factored into their decision?!........
