Sorry to hear your Umax is not coping with 8.5, and yes, I think Apple might take into account its former licensing policies when writing new versions of its OS. My clone is a StarMax 3000/200, equipped with a NewerTech G3 upgrade card. I have successfully installed a new 6Gb HD as well as Mac OS 8.5. You may find the discussion on the StarMax forum (http://www.starmax.net) useful: try starmax.net.
