I remember that I acquired the largest share of my Cisco in 1994, when "they" said routers were finished and Cisco had fallen sharply.

They were wrong. Big mistake. HUGE. And I thank them.

>>Gilder contends that bandwidth via photonics doubles 4 times faster than Moore's law electronic processors, thereby shifting the action to optical networks.

I too am a Gilder subscriber, and a very long term admirer. Gilder is a visionary. But let me remind you that even the great can be wrong. Consider the newsletter following the "Crisco" one, where he admits that he has been proven wrong by events regarding the "storewidth paradigm" - he had long predicted the demise of electro-mechanical storage in favor of silicon memories. The reverse has happened: a "colossal upset" where hard drive storage technology has eclipsed advances in computing power.

In the month following the "Crisco" newsletter, Gilder noted that Chambers moved "with astonishing speed and determination" with Monterey and Cerent and that Monterey offers a wavelength router.

Even assuming that Gilder is not wrong - which is a good idea - I suspect that Chambers, Morgridge and Valentine also have a good idea where the market is headed and are prepared not only to meet it but prosper from it. They have a notable track record too. Remember the letter they signed in the 1999 annual report:

"Cisco is better positioned than ever before to lead the internet economy and help to change the way we work, live, play, and learn."
(their emphasis)

btw, I recommend GTR to one and all. You can see sample copies at:
