This is a power play by Hutchison. By collaborating with Mannesmann, Hutchison is assured of a management voice in the entire wireless part of Mannesmann, and also will have ready access to big time cash infusions to expand its existing business. If Vodafone buys Mannesmann, the antitrust regulations will require that Vodafone dispose of Orange, since Orange is its main competition in the U.K., and as a result, Orange ends up where it started before it was acquired by Mannesmann.
