DVD Players Sales Boost Home Theater Product Revenues - 11/23/99
Factory-to-dealer sales of home theater products were up yet again in the third quarter of 1999, according to Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), totaling just over $2.65 billion representing a 15 percent increase over third quarter 1998 figures. The continued growth brought year-to-date sales revenues to $6.5 billion, up 10 percent over the first three quarters of 1998.
A key factor in the growth of the home theater sector has been the incredible sales of DVD players this year. More than 10 percent of total home theater revenues in both the quarter and year-to-date figures came from sales of DVD players, which total $672 million in sales so far this year. Factory sales of DVD players in the third quarter alone totaled $296 million, up from $108 million in the first three quarters of 1998.
For the week ending Nov. 12, 1999, DVD players unit sales to dealers jumped to 97,349, a 476.1 percent increase from 1998 while projection television sales are also steadily climbing having reached 29,139, a 21.4 percent increase. Month-to-date DVD player sales to dealer were also phenomenal at 165,484, a 475.5 percent increase while projection television sales were only 48,219, a -.05 percent decrease. Overall, DVD player sales year-to-date are 3,141,890, a 320.3 percent increase from 1998 and projection televisions at 997,169, a 12.5 percent increase.
