The home depot concept - a popular venture across the US markets where selling of home furniture, interior d‚cor, furnishings, appliances and paints is done through the Internet - has finally it India. The first company of its kind to be set up in the country will be called Embelle.com. It will have 10 showrooms across the country.
The company is set to commence operations on January 3, 2000, a source said. One of the showrooms would be in Mumbai.
The project has been estimated to cost over Rs 30 crore and will be headed by K S Dev of the Motwani group. The complete website, e-commerce strategy, on-line media design and concept has been worked out by On-line Solutions Ltd, a Mumbai-based Internet company.
According to industry sources, the home depot concept has been extremely popular across the US markets and most of the European markets. "This is an area which could become popular in India and there is enough scope for growth here," Sanjay G Hinduja, director, On-line Solutions said.
The home depot concept in the US now seeks to combine the 'click and brick' method. The 'brick' concept takes into account combining warehousing products also, as is being worked out by companies like Amazon.com, source said. Most of the other companies selling home products earlier used to only consider the click approach to woo investors and determine its success.
