CIC Links With VeriSign On Biometric Signatures Sylvia Dennis, Newsbytes
REDWOOD SHORES, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1999 MAY 4 (NB). Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) has partnered with VeriSign to join biometric signatures with digital signatures for the first time.
According to CIC, the linkup means that Adobe Acrobat forms can now be signed naturally with a "handwritten" signature to add to the security of a digital signature.
Michael Marubio, CIC's director, said that, using the firm's patented signature verification technology, Sign-it Secure will verify a user's handwritten signature and release a VeriSign Private Key.
This, he said, will make the document tamper-proof and allow recipients of the document to authenticate the identity of the document's author.
"This is the best of both worlds," he said, adding that, with the linkup, the long-running tradition of signing important documents with a pen is extended, making it secure and operable in the digital world.
"This combines the authentication security of biometric signature verification with the known and trusted transmission security of VeriSign's Public Key Infrastructure," he said.
According to CIC, by using the digital signature tool in Acrobat 4.0, users can digitally "sign" PDF files using their own signature, a move that the firm says will make electronic security natural and intuitive.
CIC's dynamic signature verification software will authenticate the user, and release a VeriSign digital certificate. Upon accessing a signed PDF document, Acrobat users can click on the digital signature appended to the document to ensure that the document was signed by a valid user -- and that it was not altered or tampered with in any way en route.
According to CIC, with Acrobat's Document Compare features, users can also improve version control and track changes by comparing versions of a single PDF document, identifying changes that were made between digital signatures applied by different reviewers.
Sign-it Secure is available to business customers from CIC, while OnSite trust services and digital certificate systems are available from VeriSign.
Sign-it Secure is available for download from CIC's Web site at cic.com .
Newsbytes notes that consumers have the opportunity to try Sign-It Secure for Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and a VeriSign test certificate for a free 60-day trial period before purchase.
