Listened to part of Bryden pitch. Some points were good, others obviously biased. Results of DeBakey VAD clinical trials were downplayed as negative. This was somewhat of a joke to listen to. These results are better than most, if not all, devices which have been under development for decades. No mention of significant improvement in quality of life compared to large inefficient diaphragm pumps with compliance chambers or vent tubes. These guys need to do an implant before shooting down other devices going through clinical trials.

Clinical trials always involve the sickest patients with the most problems. The most widely used assist device today, the intra-aortic ballon pump, had poor survival rates during clinical trials. Once the device was proven safe and effective, it's use spread to healthier patients and survival rates shot up dramatically.

Problems encountered with the DeBakey VAD during trials were mainly controller related. I think this was the cause of the switch to other VAD's for two patients. Some patients have very fragile RBC's and hemolyze easily. It's probable any device would have caused hemolysis in that patient. These patients experience hemolysis even with mechanical heart valves.

I'm not saying the HeartSaver isn't a potentially good product, just that Bryden et. al. remind me of armchair quarterbacks coaching a game from their couch on Sunday. C'mon, get on the field or be quiet on the sidelines until called upon. These folks talk too much and act too little.
