My thinking is that Valence has the following advantages. This represents my opinion based on watching them for 2 years ... SI thread has several very sharp dudes.

- greater production capacity than anyone else
- 12 month lead on anyone else
- proprietary manganese process
- extensive IP portfolio: 100+ patents issued, 400+ pending or disclosures filed
- into their 3rd generation of cell technology
- 30-50% more energy density than anyone else
- no explosions
- cheaper charging circuitry
- possibility to UL list the cell itself rather than derived packages
- order in hand from Qualcomm
- eval units at 35+ OEMs
- good management
- very good business plan worked in relative silence
- little known sector
- rocky history: R&D delays, narrowly escaped floorless convertible

Lithium Polymer is characterized by high energy density per unit weight ... so are especially suited to mobile apps ... handheld appliances ... battery powered vehicles. Other technologies are probably more suited to the stationary applications you mention ... like zinc air ... I especially like the hydrogen fuel cell ballard.com

The best recent stuff was several reports issued at the Power99 conference, available from A.D. Little. Let me know if you don't have access to them and I'll see what I can do.
