To all,
Been out of the country and out of the loop for too long!
Latest on MS II: "Press Statement: November 17th 1999
Mighty Servant 2
Dockwise N.V., the owner/operator of the Mighty Servant 2, wish to provide the following information update as at 0900hrs GMT 17th November 1999.
All the Dutch and Filipino crew members of the Mighty Servant 2 have now been repatriated to country of origin, with the exception of 2 Dutch officers who continue to receive medical attention in Singapore. As soon as they are considered well enough to travel they too will be flown home. In the meantime, members of their families will continue to stay in Singapore to be with them.
An independent hydrographic survey of the area, conducted by Fugro of Singapore, has now been concluded. The survey discovered a single isolated pinnacle of granite rock laying directly on the course line of the Mighty Servant 2. This pinnacle was uncharted . Damage to the hull is consistent with an impact of this kind.
From both independent and internal investigations we have established that the vessel was sailing her intended course and that all ship's systems were fully operational at the time of the incident. Bids have been invited from professional salvors to undertake the salvage of the vessel and cargo. Due to the scale and complexity of the operation no firm decision has yet been made in this regard, although it is hoped that a decision can be announced in the near future."
It looks like the vessel went down in about 30m of water, not 115 (that's the depth in feet), and yes, part of the structure is above water. That will make salvage a bit easier, but no word yet on how Chevron production equipment fared in the spill. If the production equipment is only 9000 tons, as advertised, than a heavy lift barge should be able to recover it (Go McDermott, yeah!).
I realize that Dockwise is not traded in the US, but keep in mind that very few of these vessels exist that can move these kinds of loads, and Dockwise has all of them.
