ADSP<----MORE ANALYSIS FROM A TRUE ISP!!

ADSP is providing an interface card for the PC that will handle 4 T1 lines
to provide upto 96 connections. The intent is to provide a low cost
alternative to the traditional Terminal Server for ISP's. The problem is
that the ROUTER is now the PC. This is slow. The Interface card depends on
a PC to provide functionality. Anyone that has run a Windows NT Server or a
UNIX server knows that this is not the best idea. A dedicated PC would be
slow without adding PROXY, RADIUS, MAIL etc as ADSP is touting. Once these
services are added, you have the reliability issue a factor. The object is
to remove as many of the possible failure points from the network to
maximize reliability at the same time instituting redundancy. This does not
do it because the PC is the greatest point of failure and this card depends
on the PC. These services that ADSP are mentioning are services that are
native to Windows NT and UNIX. Nothing new and no real industry
revolutionary technology.

Here is what you need to provide.
Windows NT or LINUX Server
2 PCI Slots
Licensed copy of Windows NT or LINUX Installation

I honestly do not feel that ISP's will invest into this as a solution for
dial up servers. There is a greater potential for down time. If I loose a
terminal server, I can have a new one online in a few minutes. The ADSP
solution will cause greater down time to replace the server unless you have
a second server nirrored or from BACKUP which is not always upto date. Ever
have a hard drive crash. Not too uncommon. I have reprogrammed a router.
I have a floppy disk with the entire configuration of the router in a text
file that I can upload to the router in 30 seconds. Too many downsides to
using the ADSP solution. I have been doing this for too long. I have tried
almost everything to provide Internet Services to my customers. I truly
believe that using this solution is a step backwards not forward for the
industry. The true costs are going to be more than $100 per port once you
add all the additional costs like network server, switch, software licenses,
programming time, etc.
