Although we are probably arguing semantics, do a little more research. For many (if not most) intents and purposes, they each consider themselves separate (the UK and Europeans). Have you heard the expression to be "very continental"? It refers to all of the traits which make for the vast differences in the two cultures, and the fact that the UK is not on the European continent.

England is an island, Europe is a Continent. As a unit, they are most commonly referred to as Europe and Great Britain. The point is, there is a distinction.
