rtalley, there are several funds that short the spx and the ndx, and they have funds that leverage you 2 to 1.

some other short funds include potsx and bearx.

one nice thing about funds, is that most brokers will allow you to purchase them in your ira account, while shorting directly is not allowed.

and since this high volume thread with 18,000 posts has been quiet for over a month, you are asking this question at a quite opportune time imo.
