CRL Tech focuses on biometrics

LOCATED in the suburbs of Bandar Tasik Selatan, between Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya, is newly incorporated CRL Technology Sdn Bhd, the new kid on the block as far as systems integration goes.

Incorporated in May 1999 with a paid-up capital of RM375,000, the company focuses on biometrics security and integrated Internet security.

Biometrics essentially utilises fingerprints instead of passwords to gain access to a computer system or a high security room such as a data centre, executive director Mr Yap Wai Jyh explained.

It is also utilised in time recording machines for corporate staff attendance, where fingerprints are used instead of punch cards. It is virtually foolproof and eliminates the possibility of one person signing in or punching in for another.

The biometrics time attendance machine is ideal for corporations with a large workforce, such as factories where the actual monitoring of employees can prove difficult.

At the Multimedia Asia 1999 exhibition in September this year CRL Technology generated interest from numerous trade visitors who were keen on biometrics time attendance equipment. It received about 300 inquiries and has concluded sales in excess of RM100,000 to date.

According to Yap, CRL Technology is expected to be profitable in its third year of operations.

Its success in the biometrics security business in the country is in part attributable to its appointment by Identix Australia Pty Ltd as the sole distributor of biometrics finger identification products for the Asean region.

The company intends to cover the four corners of Malaysia before expanding throughout the region. Although the biometrics solutions (software and hardware) are brought into the country lock, stock and barrel, the company envisions local assembly in the not too distant future. Towards this end, it is looking to increase its capital to RM1 million.

Meanwhile, as the world becomes smaller as a result of the Internet, and information becomes more important, the question of how to safeguard such data from unwanted attention or allow the sharing of such data with authorised parties becomes crucial.

Yap said: "We are at present on the third wave, where security issues are addressed by software type solutions whereby they are scalable, integratable and manageable".

The first wave was the LAN environment. The second wave was when corporations using WAN addressed security concerns by installing firewalls.

"Firewalls work well in a static environment with little change in data or users," noted Yap. However, in today's business environment where vast quantities of information is shared as a result of enterprise partnering, we believe that software type solutions is the way of the future as far as IT security is concerned".

Next in the pipeline for CRL Technology is to obtain MSC status and seek venture capital funds to finance its assembly project.

On his decision to venture into the world of business, Yap quoted "sugar king," Tan Sri Robert Kuok, who once said that "under any environment where there is risk, there is opportunity".

Yap believes that with the Government's focus on IT and its aggressive promotion of the Multimedia Super Corridor, Malaysia will one day be on par with, if not more advanced than, certain developed countries.
