The juicy bits are as follows:

Toshiba Seeks to Expand Memory Card Business Sales 20-Fold

Tokyo, Nov. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp., the world's largest maker of laptop computers, said it will expand annual sales of its memory-card-related business twentyfold by April 2003. . . .

Tokyo-based Toshiba, which currently has revenue of 25 billion yen from sales of SmartMedia [ed: boo hiss] flash memory cards. . .

Toshiba's move comes as Japan's electronics companies gear up to make hardware to enable people to listen to music downloaded from the Internet. Downloaded music is set to start eating into the estimated $6.25 billion global compact disc industry next year, industry analysts say.

Toshiba is now developing in cooperation with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and SanDisk Corp. of the U.S. the Secure Digital memory card. The SD card, which the company will begin selling in April, will offer more protection from the illegal copying of music downloaded from the Internet.
