Thanks! That was interesting. A spooky bit of serendipity: this projection means that all the CDMA phones sold to all the US CDMA operators roughly equal the number of GSM phones sold by China Telecom alone in 1999 - 16 million. It kind of ties the different topics on this thread together.

The Dataquest's spin on GSM's growth surprise is a classic of its kind:

"Primarily, this is in recognition of the fact that operators deploying those networks have finally become competitive in the marketplace."

I mean - the fact that Voicestream's subscriber growth suddenly zoomed to twice as high as Sprint's during the 3Q can't have anything to do with the quality of the service, can it?
