[November 25, 1999--INDIA] A joint survey conducted by the MAIT (Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology), the apex body representing IT hardware manufacturers and service providers in the country and the Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) revealed that the Internet market in India is growing exponentially.

From 2.6 million users by end-1999, the number of Internet users is expected to go up to 4.8 million by 2000 end and to 70 million by December 2003.

Accordingly, PC-penetration is expected to grow from 3 per 1000 to 30 per 1000 by 2005. This means the installed base should grow from 3 million to 30 million by 2005. Annual PC market growth rate should be about 50 per cent CAGR if the hardware panel report is implemented.

The survey said that IT products in India will have a 40 percent growth compared to last year. The unorganized sector constituted 53 percent of the total PC market. The "gray market" is growing at over 50 percent per annum.
