A few thoughts on the Business Week article on Qualcomm.

(By the way, thanks for posting it !)

<<Analysts estimate that by 2005, more than half of the 1 billion cellular phones will use Qualcomm's technology. That could yield hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties annually.>>

What the writer should have said was : yield additional hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties annually. (Since Qualcomm's royalty revenues are already well into the hundreds of millions per year right now).

<<European rivals such as Ericsson and Nokia are designing mobile phones and wireless networks that bypass many of Qualcomm's patents.>>

I assume this is referring to W-CDMA, which some uninformed people still believe sidesteps Qualcomm. Not true.

<<Qualcomm may be in a vulnerable spot if it has to rely on other companies to go out and sell its goods.>>

I take it the other way -- imagine how difficult a spot someone like Motorola would be if Qualcomm said : "Okay, you can no longer use ANY Qualcomm technology."

I think Qualcomm has the upper hand. Telecommunications companies WILL be selling CDMA goods.

Jon.
