Speaking in an interview with Bild-Zeitung newspaper today, Gent said: "We are confident of getting the necessary 50 pct plus one share support for our offer by the end of January."

"We are sending out a written offer to (Mannesmann) shareholders before the Christmas break," he said.

"There will be no dismissals as a result of the transaction," he told Bild newspaper, adding: "Telecommunications is a growth market, there will even be new jobs created here."
