REDMOND, Wash. -(Dow Jones)- NEC Corp. (NIPNY) is developing a 64-bit enterprise server capable of supporting up to 16 Intel Corp. (INTC) Itanium processors.

In a press release Thursday, NEC said the server's prototype is successfully running Microsoft's 64-bit Windows operating system at NEC's research and development site in Fuchu, Tokyo.

NEC, a Japanese semiconductor, electrical machinery and telecommunications equipment maker, plans to ship the new platform in the second half of 2000.
