Ramsey, i can only come up with a sort of generalized guess...most likely the event upsetting the current happy state of affairs will only be identifiable with hindsight. it may well be a very small thing on the face of it that gets the ball rolling. as to why greed sometimes turns to fear on the drop of a hat, nobody really knows that. it just happens, out of the blue. usually though the turning point is preceded by excesses and imbalances building up rapidly, such as the trade deficit e.g.
so the market sort of keeps on going with the negatives at the back of it's mind, and one day a small thing will happen that brings it all to the fore at once.
