Pioneer to launch recordable DVD player

November 25, 1999 21:54

TOKYO, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Pioneer Corp said on Friday it would start sales of a newly developed recordable DVD (digital video disk) player and DVD discs in North America and Europe next year.

The leading audio and video equipment maker said it was the world's first recordable DVD. It will start selling it in Japan on December 3, a Pioneer spokesman said.

The company aims to sell 30,000 units in Japan by March 2000 and 150,000 to 200,000 in Japan in the year starting next April.

Pioneer has yet to set an overseas sales target or the exact date of its sales start-up, he said.

The domestic selling price will be 250,000 yen for the recordable DVD player and 3,000 yen for DVD-RW discs. It allows recording of up to six hours.

By midday Pioneer shares were up 140 yen or 6.22 percent at 2,390 yen
