Rather like teenage sex... virgins don't ask about birth control, because it's outside their realm of reality.

Management has trained the techies (or middle management that herds the techies) to only report good news upwards, because that's what management wants to hear.

Perhaps like the focus on body counts in Vietnam. McNamara was a numbers guy, so numbers were devised to report on progress. The fact that the numbers were being conjured up out of the thin air was a minor issue as long as senior managment was happy.

When it crashed he spent over 4 hours on the phone long distance talking with the vender working through his problems. Luckily the vender was available.

And wasn't he happy that he'd found the problems early.

There's only so much a vendor can do... they can't force a customer to actually install the Y2Kok version & convert the data & test it.

I think it's pretty safe to predict there will be a lot of busy signals at vendors come the new year.
