Thanks and you are right...
totally...
It's a cult thing, Linux...
I met Torvalds once, and I was not impressed. A little pompous, puffed-up swede... I know, I know, I should be more careful of what I say....
I prefer Gates, Barrett, Grove, Chambers, McNealy, Case and others, compared to this know-it-all, little counterculture anti-establishment cult that is Linus Torvalds, and the openSoource / Linux movement.
Linux will succeed as a cheap OS replacement for older PC's and devices for ultra-techies, AND especially as a cheap and mostly reliable internet server platform.
Although, one thing is happening in my new job, and I am seeing that webistes that started with Linux, are now moving wholesale to Sun/Solaris 7 & presumably 8 when it comes out.
It seems that Linux were the training wheels, and now that they want reliability and scalability, they are moving (mostly) to Solaris.
After all, are you really going to trust a multi-million dollar operation that is a e-commerce website to an openSource, collaborative support movement, or to a professional corporate offering... ?
I like the idea of SUn Solaris on UltraSparc III (someday, I know) but especially on Merced/Itanium & McKinley.
As you can see carl, I have a real problem with Linux, and it's creator (torvalds). I am only a peon, but that is MHO.
Interestingly, another reason I dislike IBM, is that they know AIX is dying (as well as the RS-6000) platform, so THEY are moving everything to Linux. Another comment I could make is that they are doing this to prevent Sun/solaris from achieving even more of a foothold, and killing even more of IBM's server business (same for HP).
Finally, I think Linux will fracture, just like Unix. vendors like IBM will want to "extend" the OS, as well as make it, in their eyes, more capable and especially, scalable.
That my spiel for today Thanks for the report..
What the hell happened to Intel today ? It started out weak, and sold off even worse during the day. This stock is tuck in a trading range, with the best period of the year unfolding, and itself sold out. Makes me think of dell, which I also own.... (I own most of IBM's competition, the best of breed as they say... SUN, Dell, Intel, MSFT & EMC).
Take care everyone Jean |
