NEC, Hitachi to Form Venture for Developing Next-Generation DRAMs
November 26, 1999 (TOKYO) -- NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. will integrate their DRAM development business, Nikkei Microdevices learned from several sources related to NEC and Hitachi before the year ends.

The equally-owned joint venture, to be set up by the two firms at the end of this year to develop and design the next-generation DRAMs, will be called NEC Hitachi Memory.

An NEC official will be appointed president of the new company, and a Hitachi official will serve as vice president. The joint venture will become operational in April 2000.

Hitachi's team in charge of developing and designing DRAMs will move to NEC's plant in Sagamihara, Kanagawa prefecture to conduct work with NEC's team.

The test production line for the manufacturing of the next-generation DRAMs will be built at the Sagamihara facility.

Both companies' DRAM marketing sections will be integrated by the end of 2000.

Hitachi and NEC are discussing a plan to jointly manufacture the new DRAMs. However, they have yet to decide on the time to begin their joint production.
