The NT approach was similar in venue only. They attempted to modulate the wire, not the magnetic field surrounding the wire. Big difference. One of the obstacles that prevents NT's or other similar approaches is the blocking effect that takes place at local substations, and even closer to the residence at step-down transformer points which serve to carve up neighborhoods and districts.

High frequencies need to jump over these "choke" obstacles, which can be done, but at a high cost, with diminishing returns. Potentially a good medium for local neighborhood networking, but reach is paramount in such considerations, and it proved to be too much of a reach in this case. At least that's how it stands now.
