John,

Stew, What software is inside Tivo? It doesn't seem to be GMST's.

There is no licensing agreement between the two at present. They are using Quantum's hardware and their own patent pending software. The guide is overlayed on top of the content making it difficult to read at times. It is also tied to a telephone line backchannel and limited to updating once per day. I believe that they tried to get around certain Gemstar patents by recording via time slot only. There have been a number of product reviews posted on the Yahoo thread.

The PVR is a niche product IMO. DVRs are most likely to have a mass market appeal. TiVo would become a DVR if you purchased the box and chose not to subscribe to the 9.95/mo fee. The DishPlayer from MS & Echostar is an example of a DVR as are cable STBs with hard drives. I suspect that the next generation gameplayers from Sony and Matsushita/IBM/Nintendo will have DVR functionality.

Regards
Stew
