Jeff Tauber, chairman and chief executive of Cybershop, an online merchant specializing in brand-name toys, apparel and housewares for value prices, bragged, "We are definitely exceeding last year's numbers, and this day last year was one of our top three or four days of the entire year. People are always looking for a good deal." Among Cybershop's specials was a $99 bundle of Pokemon stuff, including trading cards, the coveted Pikachu plush animal, a pencil set and a key chain.

More than 50 shoppers rushed to the electronics department to buy Pokemon items when Target, the chic low-price division of Dayton Hudson, opened its doors at 7 a.m. in Atlanta. Target shoppers Starla Littleton and her niece Shelly Park used walkie-talkies to make their trip more efficient. "She goes to get one thing, and I go to get another," said Ms. Littleton. They kept in touch as one checked out the Pokemon display and the other headed to the Furbie babies.
