It's this new 'n-tier' stuff that's throwing me a curve.

Go to forte.com and select the whitepaper called "Managing the New Complexities of Application Development". It is the best short piece I have read anywhere on the issues in distributed computing and the pros and cons of various approaches. Not surprisingly, it does end up pointing out why Forte has picked the best way, but it is not at all a fluff piece.
